Building xfce4-mixer from source

Building xfce4-mixer trunk version in ubuntu worked fine, except
that neither the Mixer nor the panel plugin can find status icons. They
are looking for them under /usr/local/share.

I used these commands to build the application:
autogen.sh
make

It did not help to run them as superuser. I don't see the icons
installed anywhere. (The icons of the stable Mixer are
installed under /usr/share/, but that was installed from a deb
repository.) How do you install the icons somewhere so that the mixer
and the panel plugin finds them?
