there is orage time applet for xfce panel that could replace simple
time applet and could be configured to show everything you want.
for example one could have two lines in this applet with this data:
13:18:22 MSK
23.01.2009 5
that is in condig:
%X %Z
%x %w
and looks very fine with fixed size Terminus font
