GUI bigger than terminal

Hi, after a a recent debian upgrade I find GUI
bigger than the terminal, apps enlarged sliding
off the sides of the screen.

My monitor adjustment and gvidm indicate 800x600.
I was previously using 1024x768 .. AFAIK.

I have fixed it in gnome session via
System->Preferences->Display by choosing the highest res
but cannot see an equivalent option in xfce.

What am I missing here ?
