no window manager after ubuntu upgrade

I have a ubuntu system with gnome and xfce installed, because I have
different users with different preferences.

I did an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04.1.

The system is comming up and gnome works flawlessly, but when I login to a
xfce-session (my personally preferred one), there is no window-manager:
xfce starts and I have the menus at the top and the bottom of the screen.
But no window has a frame, there is no window-decoration with title and
buttons. So I cannot move or resize any window. Also missing is the 
right-click-at-background-menu.


I suppose one of the xfce (sub-)programs is missing, but which one (and why?)?

After login I have the following xfce processes:
