Quite possibly. CPU usage goes to 100%, and mplayer even seems to
use both CPUs. Turning off the compositor returns things to normal though
- speed to spare, and CPU usage barely registers.

That box was ticked already. It does improve things a little, but not
very noticeably.

I'll try with an older nvidia driver and check Andreas' suggestion.
