I think it's a particular issue with Intel graphics drivers and the
new Xorg which put's nothing in xorg.conf.

I've had no end of problems getting sensible resolutions on two
systems with Intel graphics and xubuntu 8.10.

On one system I couldn't get it to go to a high enough resolution and,
when I did get 1600x1200 for X the virtual terminals don't work at all
(monitor complains).

On the other system it defaulted to too high a resolution (1340 x 968
or some such) which just about displayed fortunately in a squished up
mess in the middle of the screen so I was able to change X to a
sensible resolution. HOwever it left my login screen in the squished mode.

Why doesn't gdm get switched with X?
