Virtual desktops?

I use this often.  (Thanks.)

On an x86_32 system (OpenSuse 10.3), it puts the status block in the
center of the screen, which I consider Good.  On an x86_64 system
(also OpenSuse 10.3), it puts the status block at the upper left corner
of the screen, which I dislike.

Any ideas?  Different versions of some library maybe?
