thunar-volman and automount

pmount isn't required. AFAIK the automount procedure is driven by hal,
dbus and exo stuff. Maybe you get some debugging output on the
commandline if you try to use exo-mount in a terminal.

Also, check that volume managemnt and automount is enabled in the
thunar settings.
