"xfce4-panel -x" ends session when xfce4-session is not in use

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Alexander: Thanks - that actually makes a lot of sense. I've studied the
script and I take it that it's that '$panel' line that is where it's at as
long as we don't exit it. When I do, it supposedly skips the while loop
(because the panel's exit status is 0 when exited by 'xfce4-panel -x'?) and
gets down to:

if test $kill_sshagent -eq 1; then
    eval `$sshagent -k`
fi

which I can see would make it quit by killing off the ssh-agent. Correct?

So do I simply comment out the ssh-agent bit? (as well as the xsetroot which
would then be superfluous?) Or maybe I should know why those lines are in
there in the first place? Because whoever wrote them supposed that if the
panel went missing (and wasn't restarted) it would be a sign of a crash? Or
because it does have some important function in the absence of the session
manager? I'm not sure I understand Erik's point about the role of the
panel/session manager :(

Rick: Autohide doesn't really do what I want. A) It defaults to hiding, wher
I want the panel to be visible by default, and B) you have to use the mouse
to make it visible.

Alexander (re fullscreen): I know but it's not quite the same - it only
applies to one app, so that when I switch workspace, it's still on. I only
really use the panel for viewing work spaces in the pager and when I know
where everything is, it's sort of superfluous.
