actually, the relevant command is in rc.4, i.e. the script that starts
runlevel 4, which is what slack uses for a graphical login. i don't think
it'd be a good idea to put it in e.g. rc.local.

in your case, i get the impression that perhaps xfce is started too early,
before certain other processes have started up properly.
