Composite crashing radeon driver

During the past week I've had numerous X crashes with the xorg radeon
driver. Vesa seems to work fine. I've had the same setup for around 2
months - IBM T42, Slackware 12.1, Xfce 4.4.2 with composite on, but this
problem has only just started. If I turn off composite it seems ok (so far
at least).
So I'm wondering if anyone knows about this and what I can look at to find
a cure? I would use the vesa driver but it refuses to power off the
display. Even 'xset dpms force off' doesn't work.
If anyone has any ideas about this it would be great.
