temporarily hiding panels

Hi,
wine has a bug that causes panels to show sometimes in fullscreen
mode. So before starting wine, I want to temporarily remove the panels
from the screen. Now I can do that easily by manipulating the
panels.xml file, and simply killing xfce4-panel.
Yet this approach seems a bit ugly and has the side-effect of
uniconifying programs on my second screen (i.e. pidgin), even though
the panel is only removed there for a split of a second.... is there
some nicer way I can handle this?
