Reload system menu?

I am trying to configure my XFCE menu. I am creating and modifying my
*.desktop files inside of ~/.local/share/applications

Here are my $XDG* environment settings:

XDG_DATA_DIRS=/home/anrobins/.local/share:etc/xdg/xubuntu:/home/anrobins/.local/share:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/usr/share/gdm/:/usr/share
XDG_DATA_HOME=/home/anrobins/.local/share

I have tried "xfce4-panel -r" to see if that would force the re-load
of the xfce menu, but it does not. What can I do without restarting my
whole xfce session to see the changes?
