The fact that "everyone" (Mirage doesn't) uses such paradigms, don't
mean that this key binding scheme is the most intuitive, or practical.
What I appreciate about Xfce, is that it stays away from paradigms.
Especially when this is not the best way to go.
What concerns Thunar, I personally have failed to get used to this way
of keyboard browsing, when contrasted to the Lynx-like directory
motion (<left arrow> - "cd .."; <right arrow> - "cd selected folder").
The latter is specifically suited to browsing your files when using a
laptop (that is, when no normal mouse is attached to the computer). I
haven't looked at whether Thunar offers the possibility to change
these (at least in hidden properties), but this is one of the reasons
of using Thunar on a per need basis and preferring emelFM2 on a day to
day basis.
