Desktop notification

All:

I have a question regarding the files living in $HOME/Desktop.
Normally, when a file is added/removed from this folder, you
automatically see the change reflected on your desktop.

I just installed Xfce v4.4.1 (using the graphical installer), and the
installation is not automatically reflecting changes to my $HOME/Desktop
folder.  I have another installation (from Fedora RPMs) that is working
properly (meaning when I add/remove files from $HOME/Desktop, I
automatically see the change reflected on my desktop).

What could I be missing that would be causing this type of behavior?
