Another menu of applications question

I think I might have mentioned this before but I haven't been able to
follow up due to life getting in the way. Anyway, this is the
curiosity...

I have GNOME, KDE & XFce on my box(es). I use latter, of course, but
do find some GNOME/KDE apps handy so nearly everything is installed.
The funky part is the "Start" menus.

When I use KDE, it seems there are dozens and dozens of apps
(especially in the games area) while both GNOME and XFce show maybe a
third of the entries. Someone mentioned that this has to do with where
the .desktop files are located. A cursory investigation has led me to
find many, many of these in places like /usr/share/applications but
there is also a /usr/share/applications/kde filled with .desktop files.
It looks like that is where the "missing" menu options are when GNOME or
XFce is running.

Could someone with the skill and intelligence (Jas? Benny?) take a look
at this? Maybe?

Thanks,
Joe, the senile old xfce'r from Virginia
