You could install the xfce mailwatch plugin, or...

There is 'mail notification'. It is part of Gnome, but it works in the XFCE
systray and gives you a summary of mail in your inbox.

Works real well with the notification-daemon-xfce, which lets you specify
events like onscreen popups or sounds.
