Workspace switcher always showing 6 workspaces

Hello list,

I'm currently using Xfce 4.4.1 (installed via gentoo portage), and I'm
happy with it. However, when I want to reduce the default number of
workspaces of 6 to 4, it looks like it does nothing. The workspace
switcher applet still shows 6 spaces, and when I open the configuration
panel, the value is 6 again. Maybe I found a bug, or I am too lame to
use Xfce?
