I just went back to GNOME and checked my themes there.
1. Crux wm theme.
2. "Simple" User Interface Prefs Theme.
3. GNOME Icon Theme. <<< Changed
For some reason, the Icon Them also affects the foreground and
background colors of drop-down menus and certain app status areas.
Flat-Blue has a very light colored bg color, which washes out
certain data. The GNOME Icon Theme has a good/pleasant/dignified
color scheme while maintaining a readable contrast.

And when I got a PC running XP at work, I immediately changed the
theme from Playskool back to the Win 2000 theme...
