Or, if you feel compiling from source, you can hack 'separator' plugin in
separator_expose to draw a gtk handle instead of a line :
http://svn.xfce.org/svn/xfce/xfce4-panel/trunk/plugins/separator/separator.c
I've done a similar hack some times ago, and it works fine. try the attached
patch.
