I won't be able to help much with EXA, I don't know much about it. You
should post on xorg mailing list, you'll be able to reach the people who
actually write the Xorg drivers, they'll be a lot more knowledgeable
than myself for this kind of problems.

On my XPS laptop I have nVidia GeForce 7950 GTX with 512Mb of RAM, but
you really don't need that much of a video card for Xrender.
My old GeForce4 MX440 works as well for accelerated render (not talking
about OpenGL of course, the GeForce4 is totally outdated for modern
OpenGL and 3D apps). The compositing was as fast with the Geforce4, as
long as you accept to install and use closed source drivers (I won't
comment on that)
