File this under "Brian writes things when he's bored":
http://spuriousinterrupt.org/files/xfce4/ws-status.c

Extra credit:

1. Make it use xosd instead of a borderless gtk window.
2. Make it use a semitransparent ARGB window to make the window mostly
transparent (or completely transparent) but the text opaque.
3. Use _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY to make the entire thing semitransparent.
4. Use 'fake' transparency to copy the bits of the screen behind it
into the gdk window's back pixbuf.
