Well, you can do just a command-line install of xubuntu using the alternate
install cd. From there, you could install packages like Xfce4, xfwm4, gdm,
thunar, mousepad, xfce4-terminal, and the various basic xserver-xorg files
along with some basic fonts . . . that might work well.
