	A slight variation of this second version worked.  This is what I get -

$ export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/pkgconfig"
&& pkg-config --modversion libxfcegui4-1.0
4.3.99.1

	I'm going to try explicitly setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH and
running ./configure again to see if that helps.
