What dm to use?

This question comes up a lot. You can check the archives, for previous
discussion, but the general consensus is variety. Enough people prefer
the features offered by kdm and gdm, and since their distro uses these
by default, that's what they run. I myself use Xdm - Xfce is my only
desktop environment, and I'm the only real user on the box. Some
people also use wdm - I suspect more than a few people are converts to
Xfce from Window Maker
Lots of people still just startxfce4 from the command line. Several
people have spoken of forking gdm/xdm/wdm and making an Xfce login
manager, or at least a nicer xdm-alike but except for occasional
patchsets for deGnoming gdm nothing has ever come of it
