n00b keyboard question.

I am trying to set up a Japanese 106 key keyboard on freebsd 6.0

When I log in remotely or I log to the console before I start my xfce 
session I have a Japanese keyboard. In the freebsd set up utility's I 
set up a Japanese keyboard so the system understands that there is a 
Japanese keyboard.

What do I need to do to make xfce understand that there is a Japanese 
keyboard?
