gtk-xfce-engine won't build

[Larry]

While trying to install xfce4.4 I get the following error;

"grep: /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la: No such file or directory"

I do have it in /usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.la

I have tried making a link to the existing file but it still won't build.
I also tried to find where this was being called so I could change the 
path but didn't find it. How can I get it to look in the right place for 
libgobject-2.0.la ??
