Cannot start xfce from vnc startup script

I am unable to open xfce from a script - possibly because of the
non-standard way it's set up.

The startup script is for tightVNC and is in ~/.vnc/xstartup.

In Slackware 10.2 a link points to an rc file for a window manager.
The link is in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and normally points to something
like xinitrc.kde or xinitrc.fluxbox in the same directory.

However for xfce, the xinitrc link points yet another link,
xinitrc.xfce -> ../xdg/xfce4/xinitrc

I've tried various ways to call with a ~/.xinitrc file including copying
over the final ../xdg/xfce3/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc.xfce and soft linking
to /etc/X11/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc -> ~/.xinitrc and finally soft linking to
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xfce -> ~/.xinitrc.  Nothing has worked.

Can anyone suggest a way out of this dilemma?
