I think you need a mail notification software, I know two very good one
(depending on what protocol you need):
The one I use actually:

This I used before (no recent update):

To launch it on Xfce start, just put a symlink to the executable in
~/Desktop/Autostart for Xfce 4.2 release or put a .desktop file in
~/.config/autostart for a 4.3 version.
My .desktop file for mail-notification:
