I just went through the exercise you are describing. apt-get and package
managers (Synaptic & Kpackage) didn't work for my upgrade. Complete removal
was required.
For one stop shopping, suggest using XFCE installer from here:
http://www.xfce.org/archive/xfce-4.3.90.2/installers/
follow these directions:
http://www.os-works.com/documentation/xfce-installers/4.2.1/xfce-installer/
using different filename
if the installer complains about missing files:
list of "depends on" here:
http://www.xfce.org/index.php?page=documentation&lang=en
GTK+ packages are debian libgtk packages. You may need to install -dev
versions.
vte.pc is one of the files in libvte-dev which can be installed from debian
sid (unstable). The installer will halt without this.
