Gentoo is a source based distro, it's normal you have many options.
With a binary based distribution it depends on the way the packages
have been sliced.
libgsf is not only used in Gnome:
"This library replaces libole2 and is used in gnumeric, mrproject, abiword,
libwv2, koffice. It is also part of the AAF format."
In Debian, if I need a real Gnome support I have to install libgsf-gnome extra
packet to use bonobo and Gnome-VFS.
