xfce4-menueditor entries being over-written

Using xfce4-menueditor to set up some additional entries on my menus.

All goes well, and entries get written into ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml.

Now run debian update-menus, and it wipes out all my chnages by overwriting the menu.xml file with a new one of its own.

Can anyone clarify how and why the update-menus app intrudes into my personal xfce4 set up and how to stop this intrusive behaviour?
