how to use "Desktop Entry" files?

I followed this procedure:
1. Right clicked on desktop to get menu.
2. Select settings.
3. Select menu.
4. On the menu editor I was able to determine the path to the external menu
file.
5. I then browsed to that same file and selected it as if I was replacing
the file that was shown in the menu editor.
6. Save and exit.
This is as close as I can remember it. I am at work and cannot reproduce
for a few more hours.
