how to use "Desktop Entry" files?

my nedit.desktop looks nearly the same ( only with english and german
translation and some additional tags ). still it does not show up on the
menu. i'm here on gentoo hence i don't know what the 'appfinder' is (
sounds like mac-os to me ;) )
