I don't think the problem is in xfce, but in gtk+. I noticed that recent
gtk+ versions crashes with some icon themes.

The fact that changing the icon theme crashes all the apps proves that
the problem lies in a common part of all apps, ie gtk+.

Removing the config dir just restores the defaults values, and thus the
default icon theme. To be precise, I think you just have to remove the
line :

  <option name="Net/IconThemeName" type="string" value="??????"/>

from the ~/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/gtk.xml

Please note that the same applies to gtk engines. Some gtk engines, e.g.
gtk+ Qt engine that comes with KDE crashes all gtk+ apps when not
running KDE, it seems.

In other words, not much we (xfce) can do about that.
