file associations (mainly mozilla)

Hi list,
now it's the second time( and user profile) that file associations are
messed up. When I try to open a file (pdf, zip ) with double click xfce
(which app is responsible?) chooses gmplayer to open it. The prior
selections (acroread, xarchiver) are still available but not default. I
don't know when or why it starts but as it is the second time and the
file extensions have no relevance for mplayer it seems buggy. Anyone
with the same problem would  make me a bug report.

System: gentoo-2.6.18-suspend2-amd64
Xfce: version 4.3.99.2 (Xfce 4.4 RC2)

any info missing? please ask.
