kaffeine is a kde app, so I bet it uses arts. I'd suggest checking
voulume levels, or mixer settings. You can add controls to xfce4-mixer
if not all controls are available.

I believe ALSA will give you better results, but I fail to understand
why you say that Ubuntu == no ALSA.

I'm using ALSA on Ubuntu (by default).
