I cannot get the shutdown and reboot options

Just so you know, you don't have to use vi when you run visudo. You can 
set it to use another editor with the $VISUAL environment variable:

export VISUAL=nano
visudo

PS I agree, it's essential to be able to edit files using vi if you want 
to admin a unix box. Doesn't mean I have to like it though.
