ENOUGH ALREADY!

to END this useless discussion, here is the a short list of things you need to use to
escape unharmed from vim:

Quit without saving without questions asked: :q! (colon, q, exclamation mark)

Write the file to disk: :w (colon, w)

Start inserting characters at cursor: i (i)

Stop inserting characters ESC (escape)

when in command mode (the default when it starts up) you can navicate using 'hjkl' or
the cursor keys. in insert mode, only the cursor keys work unless your terminfo is lacking.

Cheers,

Auke

PS Write these 4 down on a sticky note and attach to inconspcious position on your
monitor under the title "EMACS DIRECTIONS" to avoid suspicion from the other trolls,
gnomes and elves, who say they can use a real editor but really only think so.
