Changing Default Desktop Icons

I feel like a fool .... how exacltly do you create a application launcher on your desktop?

When I right click on a binary or shell script using  thunar my only choice(s) are to
create a link on the desktop on send it as a email.

Dragging an item from thunar onto the desktop doesn't work either.

What perfectly obvious step am I not seeing ....
