xplanet and compositor

Did you try the following ? (assuming you use bash, otherwise, simply 
set XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS to 1 before launching xplanet)

     XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 xplanet

Many apps don't deal well with compositor ARGB visuals...
