Modify xfce4-session or uninstall it?

Folks,
I'd like to customize the pieces of xfce4 that activate on start-up,
specifically, deactivating the task bar. At the moment, I've using
Gnome's log-in screen to control such things. Is there something in a
configuration file I can edit? Or do I uninstall xfce4-session, then
edit the xinitrc file in /usr/local/etc/xgd/xfce4?
Best,
Pete
