Hm. Put startxfce4 in your .Xsession?

Failing that, I think the components you need are xfdeskop, xfwm4 and 
xfce4-panel. Binary names might be a little off. If you have GNOME 
installed you might want to consider starting gnome-volume-manager as 
well. I hate the GNOME desktop but its hardware support is actually 
quite good.
