Some extra info ... This is from .config/xfce4/mcs_settings:

<mcs-option>
         <option name="brightness_0_0" type="int" value="0"/>
         <option name="color" type="color" value="           13056,
       26112,           39168,               0"/>
         <option name="color1_0_0" type="color" value="           28416,
            7936,           23296,           65535"/>
         <option name="color2_0_0" type="color" value="           26880,
           34048,           46848,           65535"/>
         <option name="colorstyle_0_0" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="imagepath_0_0" type="string"
value="/home/joe/MEDIA/soul-kiss.jpg"/>
         <option name="imagestyle_0_0" type="int" value="3"/>
         <option name="path" type="string"
value="/home/joe/MEDIA/soul-kiss.jpg"/>
         <option name="showdm" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="showdmi" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="showimage" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="showimage_0_0" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="showwl" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="showwli" type="int" value="1"/>
         <option name="style" type="int" value="1"/>
</mcs-option>

This would seem to suggest that the linkage is correct, but as I wrote
to Stefan, when I attempt alt+F2 and enter xfdesktop and click "run" I
get a segmentation fault. I'm pretty clueless about a work around. Also,
trawling through the xfce forum (http://forum.xfce.org) isn't proving to
be very helpful either.

So, if any kind soul out there wants to lend a hand, there are two issues:
1. How do I get my desktop back?
2. How do I get the right click menu back?

Many thanks

/j
