lost the desktop wallpaper & kde menu

Hi all

I am using xfce4.2 (4.2.2). I seem to have lost my desktop wallpaper and 
am left with a black screen/ desktop. I have attempted to change this 
via the settings, but that doesn't work. It would seem that I am to 
change something in a config file but before I go messing with that, 
would appreciate some advice.
Also, I used to be able to right-click on the desktop and I'd get a menu 
pop-up, but I seem to have lost that functionality as well.
Any help/ideas on how to restore my xfce4 desktop as it once was?
