This is not a problem with xfce.  The reason that you don't have
problems in gnome or kde is that they will run the esd or artsd sound
daemons.

You can either run those extra programs while in xfce to get the same
sound functionality as gnome/kde, or (what I think would be a better
solution) give your user access to those devices.  Most distros have an
'audio' group which has access to all the sound devices, and then
individual users can be given membership to that group.

ls -l /dev/dsp* and look at the perms
