alsa support

I compiled xfce (using the graphical installer) and chose the alsa support 
option. All my sound apps (like amarok and xmms) work but when I try to 
access the settings for sound the settings window crashes. What could be 
wrong?

I have fedora core 3 running on a dell 700m laptop.
