Additional info from a single session in which I changed back to bsd-lpr
and cups again:
auke at bose10 ~ $ xfprint4
** ERROR **: Unable to load printing system module cups_plugin.so
aborting...
Aborted
auke at bose10 ~ $ xfprint4
** ERROR **: Unable to load printing system module bsdlpr_plugin.so
aborting...
Aborted
auke at bose10 ~ $ xfprint4
** ERROR **: Unable to load printing system module cups_plugin.so
aborting...
Aborted
strace -eopen however shows:
open("/usr/lib/xfce4/xfprint-plugins/cups_plugin.so", O_RDONLY) = 4
which to me suggests that the plugin is broken somehow.
