default directories

I'm wondering if there is a way to establish default directories for
file searches? For example, when I asign icons to files I use icons
from the directory /usr/share/icons/gentoo. When I browse for an icon
file, my home directory is opened. Is there a way to asign my icon
directory as the default to open when I browse for icons?
