xfdesktop not loading or overrun by Gnome

What's happened is you have a saved session where these programs are
running. After you fix the situation for a single session, you're not
saving the new session, and the old one is being restored.
Setup your desktop just like you want it to be when you log in, then
log out, checking the save session box. Then log back in, and all
should be well.
